Project Brays
www.projectbrays.org
The Harris County Flood Control District and the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers planned and are overseeing the
construction of Project Brays.  Project Brays is the name for a series of four large storm water detention basins
and related bayou and bridge improvements located along the Brays Bayou watershed that are designed to
reduce the likelihood and severity of damage from flooding of residences, businesses and other structures due to
large rainfall events.  The largest of these detention basins is the Eldridge Basin, which is located immediately
south of Westwind Townhomes generally west of Eldridge Parkway, east of Highway 6, and north of Alief-Clodine
and the Westpark Tollway.  The Eldridge Basin will have the capacity to hold an estimated volume of 4,600 acre-
feet or 1.5 billion gallons of storm water when it is completed.  When the Eldridge Basin is completed, it is planned
that amenities and improvements will be added, such as small parks and green spaces and walking and bike
trails.  Thus, the completion of Project Brays should reduce the risk of flooding for a large area in Harris County,
including Westwind Townhomes, and will add to the recreational opportunities in our immediate area.

Recyling Information

Westwind Townhomes is located outside of the city limits of the City of Houston in West Harris County Municipal
Utility District 6.  Our MUD and the company that performs our trash pick-up currently do not have a recycling
program and we cannot participate in the City of Houston’s curbside recycling program either.  However, there
are several options for recycling some of the trash that we generate.

The City of Houston’s Westpark Consumer Recycling Center is a convenient drive-thru facility open to everyone.
The recycling center is located at 5900 Westpark, between Fountainview and Chimney Rock.  The location is
easily accessible from Westpark, Highway 59 and the Westpark Tollway.  The recycling center accepts
newspaper, magazines, office paper, corrugated cardboard boxes, telephone books, plastic containers, aluminum
cans, tin cans, glass bottles and jars, used motor oil, oil filters and used tires.  The center also accepts electronic
scrap items like computers, monitors, printers, keyboards, televisions, fax machines, scanners, VCRs,
telephones, cell phones, etc.  Westpark Recycling Center Hours:  Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Most HEB grocery stores provide large containers for a variety of recycling products including plastic, metal cans,
newspapers and magazines.  Newspapers are collected for recycling by many schools and there are many
portable metal containers for newspaper in our area, including the parking lot of St. Justin Martyr Catholic
Community, located at 13350 Ashford Point Drive, between Synott and Eldridge.  Many grocery stores recycle
newspaper and/or plastic grocery bags and sell reusable cloth bags for transporting your groceries.

Emergency Planning and Preparedness
There are many natural and manmade disasters that we all should try to plan and prepare for in advance,
including large rainfall events, large storms and hurricanes.  The organizations and websites that follow provide
some local, state and federal resources and contacts, if needed.  Several of the websites also have helpful lists,
planning tools and website links that are applicable to a variety of potential or actual emergencies.  Please
remain informed and keep important emergency information, personal records and medications, water, non-
perishable food, flashlights, a radio(s), batteries, other household provisions, etc. in safe and accessible
locations.
